Could One of the New iPhone Models Take On a Clamshell Design?

TECH NEWS – The Cupertino-based tech giant is hoping the iPhone Fold can spark real interest, so Apple will try its hand at this format too.

The iPhone Fold could bring a new clamshell-like format from Apple, as the company is reportedly looking to expand its product portfolio in this category and take on its biggest rival, Samsung. The device in question is the iPhone Flip, and while that is not its official name, the tech giant is said to be planning a launch in the near future. However, whether it happens will largely depend on how successful Apple‘s first foldable flagship turns out to be, which is expected to arrive at the end of the year alongside the high-end iPhone 18 models.

Since Samsung was the first to bring a book-style foldable smartphone to the wider market, Apple is taking a similar approach with the iPhone Fold. In the latest Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman, an editor at Bloomberg, writes that the Cupertino-based company expects its first model to generate enough demand momentum to make an iPhone Flip launch economically viable. “The product is far from guaranteed to reach the market. Still, Apple is betting that its first foldable iPhone will be successful enough to generate real demand for the category, and that customers will want additional shapes and sizes, much as they have with traditional slab-style iPhones,” Gurman claims.

This is not the first time the iPhone Flip‘s design has come up. Earlier reports suggested Apple could be targeting 2028 for a clamshell-style foldable, and since it would likely be cheaper than the iPhone Fold while still using the latest and best components, consumers may feel compelled to upgrade. Of course, knowing Apple, the company has probably set an ambitious sales target for the iPhone Fold, which means there is a high chance the iPhone Flip never makes it to market.

On top of that, the last thing Apple needs is an overcrowded lineup where stronger sales of one iPhone model cannibalize the others, making this a difficult call for the California-based tech giant.
