The Legend of Zelda Movie Takes a Giant Step Toward Its Theatrical Release

MOVIE NEWS – The live-action The Legend of Zelda movie began filming in mid-November 2025 in New Zealand, and after a production period that lasted until just a few days ago, Sony Pictures confirmed yesterday at CinemaCon – the main convention that brings together exhibitors and studios in Hollywood – that production on the live-action film has officially wrapped.

Unfortunately, they did so without sharing a single new image from the project. As many will remember, three photos were posted on social media to mark the start of filming, showing a very young Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth fully costumed as Princess Zelda and Link. Those images – still the only official ones released so far – generated considerable excitement among fans, who praised both the costume design and the visual faithfulness to the universe of a video game series that has captivated millions of players for four decades and counting.

Since then, Sony and Nintendo have chosen absolute silence: no new images, no teaser, and no additional details about the setting or tone of the movie. That kind of secrecy is not unusual in the industry, especially when there are no actors actively doing promotion and therefore no easy targets for probing press questions, but many had hoped the silence would be broken at CinemaCon. Instead, Sony opted to show attendees a behind-closed-doors preview of the upcoming Resident Evil film.

There’s Still More Than a Year to Go Before the Premiere

The difference, of course, is easy to understand. The reboot of Capcom’s horror classic is set to hit theaters on September 18, 2026, so it makes sense to start building exhibitor interest early in order to secure enough screen space. By contrast, The Legend of Zelda will not arrive in theaters until May 7, 2027, which means that unless something unexpected happens, the real marketing campaign likely will not begin until the Christmas season or perhaps a little earlier. For our sake, let’s hope it starts sooner rather than later.

Very little is known about the adaptation beyond director Wes Ball’s desire to honor one of the most beloved universes in gaming. At CinemaCon, Sanford Panitch, president of Sony’s motion picture group, merely emphasized that the movie has a huge fan base eager to see it and that, for that very reason, the studio wants to deliver a product worthy of expectations. Hopefully they will succeed, because few game franchises inspire devotion on the same level as The Legend of Zelda, and any misstep will be examined by millions of fans. After the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and its sequel, many are clearly expecting something powerful from this project as well.
