The Odyssey Shoot Was a Nightmare – in the Best Possible Way

MOVIE NEWS – Christopher Nolan, the Oscar-winning director of Oppenheimer, has once again shown why he remains one of the most influential filmmakers of modern cinema. CinemaCon audiences recently got an exclusive look at his new film, The Odyssey, which places Homer’s classical epic in a completely new light.

In the footage shown, it was the Trojan Horse that stunned viewers the most. Nolan’s version is nothing like the improvised wooden contraption we know from history books. It appears instead as a vast mechanical beast, something that looks at once like an ancient relic and the destructive machinery of a long-lost advanced civilization.

The technical ambition of the film is just as striking. The production was shot entirely in 70 mm IMAX, while the sound design has already been singled out by critics as something with serious awards potential.

Presenting the movie, Nolan naturally could not resist joking about just how many stars are packed into it. He introduced the subject by saying that the best way to lure audiences into theaters today is to put their favorites on screen, and on that front he certainly did not hold back. He added that the cast of The Odyssey was only not standing beside him on stage because the boards would probably collapse under the sheer weight of that much talent, and that listing names would be pointless because it might actually be easier to mention the major stars who are not in the film. The cast really is staggering: Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Charlize Theron, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, and Himesh Patel, to name just some of them.

As for the shoot itself, Nolan said it was a complete nightmare – in the best sense of the phrase. The production filmed in Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland, and Scotland, under blazing sun, in snow and freezing cold, on rough seas, and along mountain ridges. According to him, it was all worth it, because the result is a truly unique cinematic experience.
