Assassin’s Creed Invictus: Is It in a Disappointing State?

According to a rumor, the latest installment of the franchise, announced four years ago, isn’t in great shape, so there’s cause for concern.

A well-known Ubisoft leaker claims that Assassin’s Creed Invictus is not doing well. The mysterious project is reportedly being reevaluated following disappointing test results. The situation is allegedly so serious that the game could be delayed or canceled. Assassin’s Creed Invictus was officially announced during the September 2022 Ubisoft Forward presentation. It was unveiled as part of a multi-title plan that included four other games, two of which have been released, Mirage and Shadows. Ubisoft presented Assassin’s Creed Invictus as a multiplayer project led by Ubisoft Montreal, the team behind the popular medieval multiplayer action game For Honor. Since then, the company has shared very few additional official details about the game.

According to earlier insider rumors, Assassin’s Creed Invictus was originally scheduled for release in 2025 before being pushed back to 2026. However, Ubisoft leaker j0nathan claims that this tentative release date may be delayed following the game’s most recent announced test. On May 2, j0nathan tweeted a screenshot that appeared to be an official email invitation to an April 30 Assassin’s Creed Invictus playtest. The PC-exclusive test was “f*cking sh*t,” the insider claimed, citing a secondhand account.

The informant confirmed recent rumors that Assassin’s Creed Invictus is scheduled for release in 2026, describing the rumors as accurate. However, according to the informant, the project now has a “good chance” of being delayed or canceled because development is not going well. It is unclear whether this assessment is based on insider information like that occasionally shared by j0nathan, or if it is merely a personal assumption. Nevertheless, this does not inspire confidence that Assassin’s Creed Invictus will perform as well as Ubisoft likely hoped after roughly four years of development.

The partially censored email invitation shared by j0nathan appears to confirm earlier rumors that Assassin’s Creed Invictus will be a competitive game set in the Assassin’s Creed universe. Although the email is in French, it is unclear if the April 30 beta test was held outside France and Canada. The application requirements are also unclear. Many Ubisoft game tests rely on fan applications to build a pool of potential testers. However, Ubisoft has not yet officially offered pre-registration for Assassin’s Creed Invictus.

In the past, j0nathan and several other reputable tipsters have described Assassin’s Creed Invictus as similar to Mediatonic‘s popular game, Fall Guys. While a lighthearted party game format might seem difficult to reconcile with a relatively serious franchise like Assassin’s Creed, it wouldn’t be entirely unprecedented: Ubisoft Halifax and Behaviour Interactive‘s Assassin’s Creed Rebellion, originally released in 2018 for Android and iOS, has already proven that the IP can accommodate more stylized and whimsical interpretations, including chibi-style character designs.
