GameStop Wants to Buy eBay!

However, there is a minor snag: one company has a market value that is four times greater than the other’s, and that’s not a factor to be overlooked.

These days, brick-and-mortar game stores are hard to find, but if you visit enough American shopping malls, you’re sure to find a GameStop or two among the Rainforest Cafés. Although the video game retail industry is currently experiencing difficulties, CEO Ryan Cohen has ambitious plans for GameStop. According to the Wall Street Journal, these plans aim to transform GameStop into a behemoth worth over $100 billion. The WSJ reports that the next step in Cohen’s plans is to make an offer for eBay, the digital marketplace offering all kinds of non-gaming products with a market value more than four times that of GameStop. Naturally, the stock prices of both companies rose after the news broke, as reported by the WSJ, citing sources familiar with the matter.

This aligns with what Cohen told the publication earlier this year, when he said that he plans to acquire a major corporation in a bold move that will either be brilliant or completely foolish. GameStop is minuscule compared to eBay, which generated $11.1 billion in revenue last year. By comparison, GameStop‘s net revenue in 2025 was $3.6 billion, down from the previous year. However, the company posted an operating profit of $232.1 million, marking a recovery after years of losses. Nevertheless, the video game retailer is going through a turbulent period; it has already closed more than 400 stores in the United States this year. Its recent attempts to attract public attention have led to controversial stunts, such as Trade Anything Day, a day to trade in anything at GameStop, which employees condemned, as well as terrible Trump memes on Twitter.

Regardless of whether this plan comes to fruition, it’s unclear exactly what GameStop’s offer entails or what Cohen’s plans are regarding eBay. If you look at his Twitter account, you’ll find nothing but jokes about DEI, reactionary mockery, and more of those truly repulsive Trump memes.
