Ubisoft Buries $500,000 In Real Caribbean Treasure For Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced [VIDEO]

Ubisoft has teamed up with French startup Unsolved Hunts for a highly unusual promotion tied to Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced: a real $500,000 treasure chest will be hidden in the Caribbean. The worldwide hunt, called Gold & Crystal, will revolve around 15 puzzles, with the final prize consisting of a crystal skull and gold coins minted with the Assassin’s Creed logo. This is not designed as a quick stunt either, as the organizers say the hunt could last between two and five years.

Ubisoft is launching Gold & Crystal in partnership with Unsolved Hunts, a French startup building a real-world promotional treasure hunt around Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. The premise is direct, but the path will not be simple: participants will need to solve a chain of puzzles before the final stage sends one successful adventurer to the Caribbean, where the buried chest is waiting.

The prize is valued at $500,000. It consists of two main pieces: a crystal skull and a chest filled with gold coins. The skull is a replica of the in-game artifact, made by French lapidary artisan Hervé Obligi, while the coins are produced by AuCOFFRE, a precious metals trading company. The gold coins are minted with the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced logo.

  • $350,000 in gold coins minted with the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced logo
  • A $150,000 crystal skull with an opal
  • 15 puzzles to solve
  • The puzzles can be solved from anywhere in the world
  • Only the final act of digging up the chest requires travel to the Caribbean

According to the organizers, no prior knowledge of Assassin’s Creed is required to solve the 15 puzzles. That makes the hunt accessible beyond the usual audience of the series, at least in theory. Anyone who joins, buys one of the participation packs, and solves the puzzle chain can take part. The final step is the part that leaves the screen behind: the winner will need to travel to the Caribbean to physically dig up the treasure.

Participation Is Paid, With Seven Packs Available

Gold & Crystal is not a free promotion. Participation requires buying a pack, with entry starting at €34.99. There are seven tiers in total, and each higher tier includes everything from the levels below it.

  • Deckhand – €34.99: digital interface only
  • Sailor – €49.99: physical game materials, including maps, bottle, letters, and Hunt file
  • Gunner – €59.99: Adventurer’s Journal, a 120-page textured notebook
  • Quartermaster – €84.99: Chaotic Armada, a 2-4 player pirate strategy game
  • First Mate – €124.99: Amelia Davies and the Treasure of Blackbeard, a 6-8 hour investigation game
  • Captain – €159.99: Captain Kenway’s Flag and coin replica, with aged finish and detailed engraving
  • Pirate Lord – €199.99: Seal, Wax & Calligraphy Pack, with quill, black ink, hunt seal, and wax

The Gold & Crystal hunt officially begins on November 9, four months after the launch of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. The game itself is currently scheduled to debut on July 9. That timing makes the treasure hunt a longer promotional campaign rather than a launch-day extra.

The most important detail is the expected length. Gold & Crystal is designed to last between two and five years. That means the $500,000 prize is not tied to a quick online riddle, but to a long international puzzle hunt ending with actual travel and a physical treasure recovery. Ubisoft is not simply attaching a preorder bonus to Black Flag. It is turning the pirate fantasy of the game into a campaign that reaches outside the screen.
