The directors of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced have clarified that the remake is not an RPG, but an open-world action-adventure game. Ubisoft, however, is also well aware that the Assassin’s Creed franchise is now large enough to explore multiple genre directions.
The Assassin’s Creed saga has been a subject of debate among its fans for years. Since Assassin’s Creed Origins introduced RPG elements, skill trees, loot and stats, the franchise has divided its community between those who prefer this formula and those who miss the classic stealth-action approach. With the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag remake set to release in a few weeks, some members of the team have suggested that the series will continue to embrace both directions.
Assassin’s Creed Can Combine Both Types Of Gameplay
The creators of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced made it clear in a recent interview with Kotaku that the franchise is large enough for different types of games to coexist. Creative director Paul Fu said: “Personally, I think there’s room for both. I love RPGs, but I also love action-adventure games for their approach. The old-school Assassin’s Creed games had a lot of that approach: linear sequences, highly scripted events, and a protagonist very much tied to the story.”
“They’re very different, and I think there’s room for both”, he added. Game director Richard Knight went further, stating that Ubisoft “always has several teams working on different games, some of which haven’t even been announced yet.” The most curious part is that months ago, a leak claimed that Resynced would be an RPG, which apparently caused plenty of laughter among the development team. “When we saw the leak saying we were an RPG, we burst out laughing”, Knight said. He clarified that they did not turn it into an RPG because they wanted to remain faithful to the original game and to the way Edward evolves.
“Edward is a character who is constantly progressing, who makes mistakes but always keeps moving forward, whether it’s to earn money for his family, to defeat the Templars, or to become a better pirate. That style of gameplay, of always pushing forward, makes it an action game. I want to reassure players: we are staying true to Black Flag”, he explained. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will be released on July 9 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
