After years of fan requests and seemingly endless legal complications, Jason Voorhees has finally become the new killer in Behaviour Interactive’s game, Dead by Daylight!
After years of fan requests and seemingly endless legal complications, Dead by Daylight is bringing one of the most iconic killers in horror history into the world of The Fog. At the end of a 13-hour livestream, Behaviour Interactive announced that Jason Voorhees is officially joining the game, marking one of the most anticipated crossovers in its history. He has long been considered one of the most notable absences from Dead by Daylight’s ever-growing list of killers, especially given the game’s history of collaborating with legendary horror franchises. Behaviour has openly acknowledged that they would love to see Jason in the game. The studio has joked that the Friday the 13th killer has had a standing invitation to Dead by Daylight.
However, the biggest obstacle was never the fans’ demands. Rather, it was the complex legal battle surrounding the franchise. For years, the rights to the franchise were tied up in a highly publicized lawsuit between Victor Miller, the screenwriter of the original Friday the 13th, and director-producer Sean Cunningham. This dispute created an unusually complex legal situation in which different parts of the franchise were controlled by different parties. This resulted in a bizarre division of ownership, including separate control over certain elements of the original film, later versions of Jason Voorhees, and even certain iconic elements associated with the character. At various times, the rights to Crystal Lake Camp, Pamela Voorhees, and Jason’s iconic hockey mask were distributed differently.
The legal confusion also had serious consequences for Friday the 13th: The Game. The game was forced to stop accepting new content updates before being taken off the market entirely. For years, players wondered if licensing complications would permanently prevent Jason from appearing in other games. Now, however, it seems that the impossible crossover has finally happened. Although Behaviour hasn’t revealed any details yet, the announcement alone is a significant moment for Dead by Daylight.
Jason Voorhees is one of the most popular killers, and longtime horror fans have been eagerly awaiting his arrival.
