MOVIE NEWS – Daniel Craig’s departure left James Bond with one of Hollywood’s biggest casting questions, and Amazon MGM is now preparing the franchise’s next chapter with Denis Villeneuve directing. One of the most frequently mentioned longtime fan favorites has finally revealed whether he is actually in contention for the 007 reboot.
Almost no role in recent memory has been more hotly discussed than James Bond, who has not been seen on the big screen since 2021’s No Time to Die. That movie marked Daniel Craig’s fifth and final time playing the titular 007 agent, and after Amazon MGM Studios purchased the rights to the Bond franchise from Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson for $20 million, the series was put into flux. However, the studio quickly made sure to let viewers know it was serious about bringing Bond back to prominence, hiring Dune and Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve as the director of the 26th official movie in the franchise.
Dozens of names have been put out into the ether over the years for the man to take over Bond, although it took Amazon years to offer the first hints at who may be in the running. The most popular choices have included British stars like Henry Cavill, known for Man of Steel, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, known for Kick-Ass, Callum Turner, known for Masters of the Air, and Jacob Elordi, known for Euphoria, but even more major names are expected to be in contention. Now, that list seems to be down one big contender after recent comments from one of the role’s longest-running fan favorites.
Speaking with People at the Masters of the Universe movie premiere, Idris Elba confirmed that he is not in the running to play James Bond in the new movie. Asked how he felt about his name being “thrown out” for contention, he admitted that it is actually “not getting thrown out,” noting that Amazon is “going younger” for the role. He feels he was never truly a contender to take on Bond, but shared his best wishes for those going for the role: “My name’s not getting thrown out, no way. They’re going younger. And I wish them all the luck in the world. I can’t wait – it’s going to be amazing. I’m honestly not in the race ever. I wasn’t in the race in the first place.”
While Elba was a popular fan cast for James Bond for years, approaching his 54th birthday in September, he realizes he is above the age range Amazon is looking for in its new leading actor. Along with an expectation that the new Bond will “ooze sex appeal,” which would still apply to Elba even at his age, Amazon seems to be looking primarily at younger stars and even potentially unknowns for the role of 007. That direction suggests the studio may want someone who can carry the franchise over a longer period rather than a short-term transitional figure following Craig’s run.
Amazon May Be Looking Beyond The Obvious A-List Names
With casting now officially underway for Amazon, Jay Kelly and You star Tom Francis has reportedly now auditioned for Bond, potentially indicating that Amazon is looking into non-A-list stars for this highly coveted role. That approach would not be unusual for the franchise. James Bond has often been a role that does more than exploit an actor’s existing fame; it can transform the performer who lands it into an international figure almost overnight. If Amazon is seriously considering less established names, it may be looking for someone who can be shaped into a long-term Bond rather than someone who already arrives with too much baggage from other franchises.
Considering the casting search is far from over, the next few months will be filled with new speculation and updates on what the studio plans to do for this world-famous spy. For Amazon MGM, the stakes are unusually high, because the next film will not only introduce Daniel Craig’s successor but also define the first major Bond chapter after creative control moved away from Broccoli and Wilson. Villeneuve’s involvement gives the project immediate prestige, but the actor chosen for 007 will decide whether audiences view the reboot as a genuine new beginning or a carefully managed franchise relaunch. Elba’s latest comments may close one long-running fan dream, but the Bond rumor machine is nowhere near finished.
