TECH NEWS – Valve’s PC is likely close to becoming available for purchase, much like the hard-to-find Steam Controller.
Although the release date has not yet been confirmed, the Steam Machine is much closer to hitting the market. Valve’s upcoming hardware was added to Khronos’ official Vulkan-compatible product database a few days ago. The new entry lists the Steam Machine as the “AMD Steam Machine” and includes details about the hardware. It is supported by Vulkan 1.4 via an open-source driver designed for AMD GPUs. It has a CTS version number of 1.4.5.3, belongs to the RADV_NAVI33 product family with Mesa/RADV drivers, features an AMD Custom CPU 1772 processor, and runs on the Linux 6.16.12-valve6-1-neptune-616-g37101e112292 x86_64 operating system.
While inclusion in the official database of Vulkan-compatible products suggests an imminent launch, this listing does not indicate an exact release date. However, being included in the database is one of the final steps before launching new hardware. Therefore, Valve is undoubtedly preparing to introduce a system that former Xbox executive Mike Ybarra considers to be the PlayStation’s true competitor. The extent to which the system will threaten the PlayStation 5’s dominance depends primarily on its launch price, which is still unconfirmed. Rumors suggest that the price has skyrocketed due to rising RAM prices, so current market conditions may force Valve to set a higher price, which will affect the system’s appeal.
The price of the Steam Machine could rise further for some gamers if speculators buy up the initial units, as happened with the first batch of Steam Controllers. However, the company is preparing for this possibility by implementing a waiting list system. Hopefully, this will prevent the problem that has plagued nearly every hardware launch since the 2020 release of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
