TECH NEWS – Artificial intelligence can now generate videos, and many people are uploading them to Google’s video-sharing platform.
We’ve all likely watched a YouTube video that left us wondering whether it was real or AI-generated. The good news is that YouTube has listened to user feedback and is moving AI labels for photorealistic and significantly modified or AI-generated content to a more prominent location. However, in the promotional video, these labels appear quite small. AI warnings will appear below the video player and above the description for long videos generated by AI. For shorter videos, the labels will appear directly on the video itself, which is at least a clearly visible spot.
However, both versions still look like something we could easily overlook. A big, flashing “THIS VIDEO IS BULLSH*T” caption might be overkill, but it might help dispel fears that AI-generated videos are becoming increasingly hard to spot. YouTube’s other announcement that they will use new internal flags to identify AI-generated content might help a bit more in this regard. Uploaders are required to manually indicate when they use photorealistic AI, but we assume that many will not do so. With the introduction of this technology, however, the platform says it will be able to automatically apply a label to anything containing significant photorealistic AI usage.
“As this technology continues to improve, creators will remain in control. If a creator believes that their content has been incorrectly identified as AI-generated, they can update the disclosure status in YouTube Studio. However, disclosures will remain permanent in a handful of cases, including: Content created using YouTube’s own AI tools, such as Veo or Dream Screen, and content containing C2PA metadata indicating that it was created using generative AI. Our goal is simple. We want to make it as easy as possible for creators and viewers to have the right information,” wrote YouTube.
In a world where YouTube dominates the online video market and there are serious concerns about the quality of AI-generated content on the platform, this new labeling system seems like a small step.
