MOVIE NEWS – Keanu Reeves is officially returning as John Wick in John Wick 5, with Chad Stahelski once again set to direct. Lionsgate says, however, that the movie still has a long way to go before it can receive a production schedule or release date.
Few action franchises have become as dependable over the past decade as John Wick. The universe already includes four mainline movies, the feature spin-off From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, and the television series The Continental, with further projects still in development. That is especially notable because John Wick himself appeared to die at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4, leaving many viewers to assume that Keanu Reeves had finally said goodbye to the legendary assassin. Lionsgate nevertheless confirmed a fifth installment at CinemaCon in 2025, and new official information has now emerged.
Adam Fogelson, chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, has revealed that Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski have found the central idea that has them genuinely excited about continuing the story. The studio executive also made it clear, however, that the project remains far from production. “There are a lot of steps, so I wouldn’t want to put a timeline on it. But, in terms of finding a core idea, they – Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves – appear to have landed on something they’re excited about, and now we’ll see.” Nothing has been revealed about the plot, John Wick’s fate, or how the character could return after the ending of the fourth film.
The Caine Spin-Off Is Already Filming
Lionsgate is expanding the John Wick universe in other directions as well. Donnie Yen is returning as Caine, the blind assassin introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4, and he is also directing the character’s standalone film, currently known simply as Caine. The story takes place after the fourth movie and follows Caine after he is freed from his obligations to the High Table. Rina Sawayama is returning as Akira, meaning the conflict teased in the post-credits scene will not be left unresolved. Production began in April 2026, with filming starting in Budapest before continuing in Hong Kong. No official release date has been announced yet.
The question for the franchise is therefore no longer whether there will be more John Wick, but what form that continuation will take. A fifth mainline film would have been difficult to imagine without Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski, and Lionsgate clearly knows that simply bringing the character back for another spectacle of violence will not be enough. The team needs a story that genuinely explains why John Wick should return after what looked like a final ending – and for the first time, it appears they may have actually found one.
