MOVIE NEWS – Paramount’s first behind-the-scenes featurette has opened the gates of Orïsha: Children of Blood and Bone adapts Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling novel with Idris Elba and a formidable ensemble, while the full trailer arrives on July 28.
Idris Elba has become increasingly active in supporting film projects built around African stories and talent, and his next large-scale theatrical release follows the same path. Gina Prince-Bythewood’s film promises a fantasy world rooted in West African mythology, now explored in greater detail through the newly released featurette.
The Crown Erased Magic From the Kingdom of Orïsha
Tomi Adeyemi’s 2018 novel debuted at the top of The New York Times bestseller list, and studios competed for its screen rights for years. The story follows Zélie Adebola, a young woman living in a kingdom where magic once flowed freely before a ruthless royal family destroyed it. Zélie sets out to restore that lost power, drawing both her brother and two of the king’s children into the conflict.
The ensemble includes Thuso Mbedu, Damson Idris, Amandla Stenberg, Cynthia Erivo, Lashana Lynch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Regina King, Tosin Cole, Zackary Momoh, and Richard Mofe-Damijo. The production team is equally accomplished: Hannah Beachler won an Oscar for the production design of Black Panther, while cinematographer Polly Morgan previously shot The Woman King for Prince-Bythewood.
The Director Wants a Grounded Fantasy Epic
Prince-Bythewood is not treating the material as a purely digital spectacle. “Despite this fantastical conceit of magic and fantasy, I wanted the audience to feel grounded like they were in the real world,” the director explained, adding that the effect begins with production design and extends to costumes, casting, and action.
There is some tension surrounding the production, as Adeyemi recently distanced herself publicly from the adaptation. That could dampen enthusiasm among the novels’ most committed readers. Paramount will release the film on January 15, 2027, and because the source material is a trilogy, the studio clearly sees the potential for a longer film series.
