Square Enix is already looking beyond the potential remakes of earlier entries. Final Fantasy XVII was also mentioned during the event…
Since Final Fantasy VII Revelation will conclude the Remake series next year on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, Square Enix fans are already wondering what the publisher has planned for its future large-scale AAA games. It remains unclear what awaits JRPG enthusiasts, but remakes of games such as Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy VIII, and Final Fantasy IX, if they are ever made, may not be able to match the immense scale of the Final Fantasy VII Remake series. At this year’s Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest in Berlin, Naoki Yoshida, better known as Yoshi-P, warned that these games would require more than three installments. In addition to discussing how future remakes in the series could be handled, the event also featured a relatively official mention of Final Fantasy XVII.
Yoshi-P says if they were to Remake FF6, FF8 or FF9 they’d probably have to release them in 4 or 5 instalments because they are so big!
“Of course I understand the feelings of the players, but you gotta think about it. Look at Final Fantasy VI, it’s such an incredibly huge game.… pic.twitter.com/fHrZVx4Vra

Yoshi-P says fans wanting Naoki Hamaguchi to make Final Fantasy 17 is one of the highest praises he can get!
“I saw a lot of things in the comments. They were like ‘Okay, I get it. I get it. I am not going to ask for a 6, 8 or 9 remake.’
But there were comments along the lines… pic.twitter.com/PTJk8Sk341

“Of course, I understand the players’ feelings, but you have to think about it. Take Final Fantasy VI, for example: it is an unbelievably enormous game. Its scale is simply immense. The same applies to other titles such as Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy IX. Now that you are working on the Final Fantasy VII series, I completely understand why people are asking for remakes of other titles. But if we remade those games as well, we would probably have to release them in four or even five installments. I read many comments saying, ‘Okay, I understand. I understand. I am not going to ask for a remake of VI, VIII, or IX.’ However, there were also comments along the lines of, ‘I want this guy to make Final Fantasy XVII.’ I think that is probably the highest praise a person can receive. You do not have to answer that,” Yoshi-P said while speaking with Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the Final Fantasy VII Remake series.
As people who know these games well, we can only agree with Yoshi-P, especially regarding Final Fantasy VI. Even within the limitations of the SNES, the sixth installment remains one of the largest 16-bit JRPGs ever created, with an enormous cast and two distinct world maps. We would love to see the game remade in the style of the Final Fantasy VII Remake series, allowing us to perform a suplex on the Phantom Train with Sabin through the franchise’s hybrid combat system, enjoy the Opera House sequence with cutting-edge visuals, and give Kefka the attention he deserves. However, we fully understand that this would be an enormous undertaking, and one that could take decades to complete.
Since development of Final Fantasy VII Revelation will wrap up in a few months, it is still far too early to learn what Hamaguchi’s next project will be. Nevertheless, we would love to see how the director would handle a completely new installment and how effectively he could capture the spirit of the franchise.
