MOVIE NEWS – Amazon’s expansion of the Warhammer 40,000 universe will not be limited to the live-action adaptation starring Henry Cavill. The company is also developing an adult animated series, with Secret Level contributor Blur Studio responsible for bringing its brutal science-fiction world to life.
What was once largely confined to short in-game cinematics and ambitious fan films could soon become a fully realized, high-budget adaptation. The future of Warhammer 40,000 looks particularly promising at Amazon, where a live-action series starring Henry Cavill is already moving forward. The project is being written by Mike Flanagan, one of the most prominent names in modern horror.
Few people expected Amazon to launch two separate attacks on Games Workshop’s enormous science-fiction universe at the same time. Alongside the live-action production, an animated series aimed at adult viewers is now in development, suggesting that Cavill’s ambitious adaptation may become the foundation of a much larger screen franchise.
The Secret Level Team Will Animate the New Warhammer Series
According to Variety, Amazon MGM Studios is developing the new production, with Henry Cavill serving as an executive producer while continuing to oversee the live-action adaptation. The company has recruited one of the industry’s most highly regarded teams for the animated project. Blur Studio, which previously contributed to the spectacular anthology Secret Level, will handle the animation and visual effects.
The American animation and visual-effects company was founded in 1995 by Tim Miller, who later became internationally known as the director of Deadpool. Blur has since created cinematic sequences for numerous video game franchises, including Star Wars: The Old Republic and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II. Its experience also extends to major movies, as the studio collaborated with James Cameron during the production of Avatar.
The team is already familiar with the Warhammer 40,000 universe. In 2024, Blur worked alongside Unit Image, Digic Pictures, and Goodbye Kansas on Secret Level, contributing to the episode based on Games Workshop’s franchise. The new show has therefore been entrusted to artists who have already demonstrated that they can convincingly represent the merciless wars of the 41st millennium.
Specific story details remain limited, but Variety reports that the series will revolve around the Deathwatch. This elite military organization brings together Space Marines from different Chapters and specializes in eliminating alien threats. The production is expected to serve as a spin-off from the corresponding Secret Level episode, while players may also recognize the Deathwatch from the opening sequence of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.
Dave Wilson will return as co-creator and director after helming the Warhammer episode of Secret Level. He will be joined by Masters of the Air writer John Orloff as co-creator, while Cavill, Tim Miller, Natalie Viscuso, Roy Lee, and Andy Smillie are listed among the executive producers. Amazon has not yet announced an expected release date.
