It Seems Phantom Blade Zero Will Get a Disc Release!

Although S-Game hasn’t said anything about it yet, there might be something to it after all – maybe Sony is trying to keep it a secret to avoid further criticism on social media…

The popularity of physical media has declined dramatically in recent years, with the vast majority of sales now taking place in digital format. Grand Theft Auto VI set the precedent for digital-only releases, and Sony later announced that it would stop releasing physical copies entirely by 2028. Amidst this shift, concerns arose that the highly anticipated Phantom Blade Zero would also forego a physical release. However, a major Asian retailer has confirmed that the Chinese title will indeed get a disc release.

A Reddit user emailed Play Asia to ask whether the pre-orders it had opened were for the physical or digital version. The retailer replied that the pre-orders were for the physical version, which comes in a box containing a disc. To put this in context, Sony has announced that it will continue to sell physical boxed editions, but these will come with codes, which contradicts the initiative’s purpose. Phantom Blade Zero, however, really does come with a disc inside the box.

Fans will be pleased to hear this, as they were outraged by the digital-only release. While S-Game hasn’t officially confirmed this yet, it may do so soon, as a State of Play presentation for the game is scheduled for early tomorrow morning, and the wuxia action RPG, set to be released on October 29 for PlayStation 5 and PC, is certain to appear in tomorrow’s news as a result.

The game was in the news a few days ago, not just because of the State of Play and the system requirements, but also regarding the contents of the Standard and Deluxe editions. At that time, there was no mention of a physical release, but it seems that Sony is deliberately keeping this under wraps in order to gently steer players toward its monopoly: if there is no disc version, the only option is the PlayStation Store, where Sony reigns supreme…
