Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition Is Looking Particularly Promising! [VIDEO]

This bodes well for FromSoftware’s next game, The Duskbloods, which is currently in closed beta testing.

Originally, FromSoftware planned to release Elden Ring for the Nintendo Switch 2 last year. However, the Japanese studio, led by Hidetaka Miyazaki, ultimately decided not to compromise on the quality of the port and postponed the release of the Tarnished Edition to August 28. Based on the new footage, the studio made the right decision. It shows significant improvements over last year’s version, which bodes extremely well for The Duskbloods.

Although it doesn’t reach 60 FPS, the Switch 2 appears to handle the game much better when docked; the footage shows no stuttering, even during intense boss battles. While 30 FPS isn’t ideal for this type of game, FromSoftware fans are accustomed to compromising to enjoy games like Bloodborne, which had significant frame rate issues on the PlayStation 4. In handheld mode, Elden Ring performs relatively well, though the footage shows some frame rate drops during boss fights. Since there’s still more than a week until the release date, these issues may be resolved before launch.

FromSoftware has developed some of the best action RPGs of the past few years. However, from a technical standpoint, the Japanese studio is far from being among the most advanced. Their games typically have issues that they can’t always resolve, and they often require mods on PC to perform optimally (e.g., the Dark Souls 3 path tracing mod). Given the significant improvements to Elden Ring on the Nintendo Switch 2, we have plenty of reasons to be optimistic about The Duskbloods, a Switch 2 exclusive coming this year. Since FromSoftware uses its own proprietary engine for its games, the development and optimization work done for Elden Ring will likely positively impact the new game as well. It promises a unique experience compared to the studio’s other single-player titles.

Hopefully, once the closed beta ends on August 24, we’ll finally get to see more of the game that FromSoftware has reportedly spent the most time refining.
