K-Pop: The Debut – Korean Pop Is Making Another Push Into Movie Theaters

MOVIE NEWS – K-pop’s presence on screen continues to expand, with Paramount following animated hits and concert films with a live-action story aimed directly at the genre’s global audience. K-Pop: The Debut stars Ji-young Yoo, who this time had to do far more than provide a voice, performing both vocals and choreography during a production shot entirely in Seoul.

The story follows Lizzy Lee, a young Korean-American woman who becomes increasingly frustrated with the safe and predictable future her family has planned for her. Without telling them, she enters an intense talent competition in Seoul designed to select the four members of a new international K-pop girl group. Contestants arrive from around the world, while Eric Nam appears as a mentor who helps Lizzy navigate a competition that quickly becomes as much a personal challenge as a professional one.

Speaking with Teen Vogue, Yoo explained that she does not see the movie as simply celebrating the glamorous surface of K-pop. “This movie points out that the world often encourages people, especially young people, to play it safe, settle for less, and put their biggest dreams aside, which means they never really achieve something great,” she said.

Filming in Seoul Meant Actually Singing and Dancing

Yoo was already familiar with the world of K-pop before accepting the role, having voiced Zoey, one of the members of HUNTR/X, in KPop Demon Hunters. Animation spared her from having to physically perform the elaborate routines herself, but The Debut required her to sing and dance for real. Dance was the easier part of the preparation because she has practiced it since she was three years old, while the vocal side required a considerably more intensive training process.

The entire film was shot in Seoul, giving the city a substantial role beyond simply serving as a backdrop. The production uses the competitive structure of the K-pop industry, performance preparation, and Lizzy’s search for her own identity as major elements of the story. K-Pop: The Debut opens in Hungarian theaters on February 25, 2027.
