A new Gamescom 2026 trailer and fresh screenshots have arrived for the post-apocalyptic romance action RPG Showa American Story. NEKCOM Games’ strange alternate history is currently in development for PlayStation 5 and PC.

In this timeline, Japan culturally colonized America by the late 1980s, transforming the United States into an absurd fusion of retro Japanese and American pop culture. Chigusa Choko rises from the dead and begins a road trip to discover what happened to her and to a continent now filled with zombies, monsters, and eccentric survivors.

Choko can wield a broad mix of melee and ranged weapons, from samurai swords and firearms to a drill arm and improvised tools. Fast real-time combat combines dodges, counters, and executions, while both equipment and the protagonist’s attributes can be upgraded.

The journey runs from Neo Yokohama through San Francisco and Las Vegas to Neo Tokyo #4, with player choices affecting the world and relationships with survivors. Side quests are joined by playable arcade machines, workouts, hopscotch, and other period-inspired mini-games that improve Choko’s abilities.

The Chinese development team drew on its own memories of the 1980s, when American and Japanese pop culture entered its environment at the same time. That influence makes Showa American Story an unusual blend of bloody action, dark comedy, and an emotional story about human connections.
