MOVIE NEWS – Netflix and Wizards of the Coast are developing a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series set in Ravenloft, the tabletop universe’s most iconic gothic-horror realm. Count Strahd von Zarovich, Barovia’s feared vampire lord, will stand at the center of the story.

Dungeons & Dragons is heading back to television, but this adaptation is leaving brighter heroic fantasy behind. Netflix’s new production will explore Ravenloft, a supernatural setting shaped by black magic, tragic romance and gothic terror.

The project is described as a high-end fantasy series that brings large-scale adventure together with character-driven drama. Ravenloft is particularly well suited to that approach: it is not merely one location, but a collection of connected Domains of Dread, each built around its own horrors and cursed rulers.

Strahd’s origin story will drive the series

The plot is expected to trace the rise and fall of Strahd von Zarovich. His story revolves around power, love and obsession, following his transformation from a tragic antihero into one of the most celebrated villains in the entire Dungeons & Dragons mythology.

Tabletop fans know the vampire lord best from the Curse of Strahd campaign. His past has also been explored in the novels I, Strahd: Memoirs of a Vampire and I, Strahd: The War Against Azalin, while the Netflix series could introduce the tragedy of Barovia’s ruler to a much wider audience.

Alfonso Cuarón joins the Netflix production

John August, whose credits include Corpse Bride and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, is creating the series. Alfonso Cuarón, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind Gravity and Roma, is attached as an executive producer.

No cast members or release date have been announced, suggesting the show remains at an early stage of development. Even so, the creative team and the choice of Ravenloft signal that Netflix is aiming for an ambitious, distinctly darker take on Dungeons & Dragons.
