Onimusha: Way of the Sword Is over a Million; Capcom Turns Towards Older IPs!

Maybe the Japanese company will FINALLY get around to giving Dino Crisis a new installment after more than two decades…?

Capcom announced that total sales of the sword-fighting action game Onimusha: Way of the Sword exceeded one million copies on the day of its release. This brings the Onimusha franchise’s cumulative sales total to over 10 million copies. Onimusha: Way of the Sword was released on September 4 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store).

Capcom announced that, following the successful launch of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, it will focus on reviving long-dormant intellectual properties. According to Capcom, pre-release demos and trailers helped the game gain widespread recognition before its launch.

The company stated that, in addition to the major new titles it releases annually, Capcom is also focusing on intellectual property for which no new games have been released recently, adding that it intends to further increase corporate value by leveraging its catalog of older games. Capcom used nearly identical wording in a December 2024 investor announcement related to game presentations, and as early as 2019, it had already indicated to investors that leveraging the value of older intellectual properties was part of its long-term plans.

And Capcom has a ton of IPs that it can do something with. And I’m not talking about things made under license (e.g., DuckTales was like that, but Disney would have a thing or two to say about that), but rather things that belong exclusively to Capcom. Dino Crisis is one such example, but let’s continue the list: Bionic Commando, Breath of Fire, Dead Rising, Final Fight, Steel Battalion, Strider, Viewtiful JoeViewtiful Joe, for instance, could be particularly interesting, since Hideki Kamiya is currently developing a sequel to Okami for Capcom—and he was the director of that game as well.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
