Is Like a Dragon Sailing into Pirate Waters?

There are rumors that SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s franchise might take an interesting turn in the near future, and we might hear about it during the Tokyo Game Show…

On the ResetEra forum, user lolilolailo, who has leaked some SEGA games in the past, wrote that the next installment of the Like A Dragon franchise, formerly called Yakuza, will be related to pirates in some way. On a Chinese forum, A9VG, it’s believed to be about Ninja Gaiden (and that’s not SEGA’s IP, but Koei Tecmo’s), but it’s possible they’re wrong. The leaks from there are only related to PlayStation, but with the franchise going multiplatform lately, it’s likely that the pirate-based episode of Like A Dragon will eventually show up on Xbox and PC.

What’s interesting is that A9VG says that not only do we not have to wait long for the announcement, but also for the release, as they believe that the yet-to-be-announced episode of Like A Dragon (which will definitely be in the title of the game) will be released in February! This would lead us to believe that it could be a Like A Dragon spin-off. After all, there was one last fall (Like A Dragon Gaiden: A Man Who Erased His Name), and it was a spin-off of Yakuza (7): Like A Dragon, so if there is indeed a pirate-themed episode in the works, it would be a spin-off of Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth or Yakuza 8.

If SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio are indeed working on something like this, it’s a logical roadmap for the two companies to follow. The first announcement could come during the Tokyo Game Show, so the game could be announced this fall, and then supposedly in February, and then we’d guess the target platforms (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One).

But it’s not official yet!
