Why Johnny Depp Has Been Back in Character as Jack Sparrow While in Spain

MOVIE NEWS – Fans of the Pirates of the Caribbean series haven’t given up hope that Johnny Depp will return to the big screen as Captain Jack Sparrow, though this seems less likely by the day. Yet, even if Depp doesn’t step back onto a pirate ship, it appears he’s more than willing to revive the character for his biggest fans.

While in Spain for the San Sebastián International Film Festival, where he presented his latest directorial project, Modi – Three Days on the Wing of Madness, Depp took a break to don his iconic Captain Jack costume and visited a local hospital. His visit, which was covered by local media, brought smiles to the faces of children and hospital staff alike as Depp toured the children’s ward, greeting doctors and nurses with the familiar swagger of his famous rogue.

Although Depp has stayed largely out of the spotlight since his 2022 court battle with Amber Heard, he recently returned to screens in the historical drama Jeanne Du Barry. In addition to his directorial work on Modi, Depp has been quietly pursuing smaller projects in Hollywood, steering clear of larger blockbusters like Pirates of the Caribbean.

As with every major franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean will eventually set sail again, though what form it will take remains up in the air. Rumors have circulated about various potential developments, including a sixth installment of the original series, as well as a reboot with Margot Robbie possibly in the lead.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer gave an update on the franchise in June during promotions for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. In an interview with ComicBook, Bruckheimer said:
“We have a script being written right now. Hopefully, it’ll be finished in about a month and be as good as I think it will be. Let’s hope Disney likes it and gives us the chance to make it.”

Even though Disney has to approve the script, it seems unimaginable that they wouldn’t want to revisit the Pirates of the Caribbean universe, with or without Depp. Still, any new film in the series may not have smooth sailing ahead. The fifth film, Dead Men Tell No Tales (Salazar’s Revenge, depending on the country), didn’t reach the same level of success as its predecessors, raising questions about the franchise’s future. Additionally, excluding Depp from future films could ignite a backlash from his loyal supporters, possibly leading to boycott campaigns across social media.

As the world waits for the next chapter in the Pirates saga and Depp’s potential involvement, it seems the actor isn’t ready to part ways with his iconic role, at least off-screen. He continues to show up for his young fans where he’s needed most. For those who want to revisit his adventures, the Pirates of the Caribbean films are available for streaming on Disney+.
