Silent Hill: Townfall: Despite Annapurna Collaboration, Development Continues

With the sudden collapse of Annapurna Interactive, we may have forgotten about a project that was announced some time ago, and it’s worth taking a look to see what’s going on with it…

In the year 2023, Jon McKellan, the creative director of Silent Hill: Townfall (who works at No Code; the team is known for Observation), promised in vain that we would see more of the game. That didn’t happen, and in the meantime the entire Annapurna Interactive staff has quit, so we have every right to be worried that we’ll be saying goodbye to that part of Silent Hill. However, No Code and Annapurna Interactive recently took to Twitter to apologize, but Silent Hill: Townfall is still in development and is being developed by Konami, Annapurna Interactive and No Code.

While this is encouraging, remember what McKellan said about the game after the short teaser video: “I remember playing the original Silent Hill on the PlayStation 1 back in 1999 and becoming a fan from that moment on. So to be working on this game with our friends at Annapurna is like a dream come true. It’s a real honor for us to be able to bring a new title to this series that respects the source material while doing something different with it.

To say that Silent Hill was an inspiration for No Code would be a huge understatement. Our previous two games, Stories Untold and Observation, both played with the same deep psychological horror, and No Code is all about weaving that narrative and experience into every aspect of our game design, our audio, our visuals, even our UI,” said McKellan.

So Silent Hill: Townfall is in the works, but that doesn’t give us much cause for optimism if they still haven’t gotten around to showing more details about the game after all this time. Okay, Silent Hill 2 Remake is coming next week and that’s what everyone is waiting for, but we should think beyond that…
