Will Valve Release a New Steam Deck Model Each Year?

STEAM DECK NEWS – Valve started a minor revolution with their portable PC (although it wouldn’t have happened without the Nintendo Switch), so it’s worth keeping an eye on how Gabe Newell and his team approach their hardware.

In the case of the Steam Deck, it’s fair to say that it’s a bit outdated in terms of hardware compared to its competitors (Asus ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, MSI Claw…). Nevertheless, Valve has stuck to its guns and has only changed the appearance of the device, so that you can buy the handheld PC in an OLED version instead of with an LCD display. But what are the plans for the future?

Lawrence Yang and Yazan Aldehayyat, two of the designers of the Steam Deck, confirmed in an interview with reviews.org that they will not be updating their devices on an annual basis. In some places, Valve’s device is only now officially available, and incredibly, Australia is only now getting its hands on the Steam Deck, with pre-orders starting in November. This comes as a big surprise, as the Steam Deck was released in 2022, and the OLED version of it has been available since last November. “Down under, both the LCD and OLED versions will only be available now.

There will be a new Steam Deck model, it’s official; it will have much more powerful hardware and will allow you to run many more games at the right resolution and frame rate. There are already some creative minds who can get World of Warcraft running on Valve’s portable PC, so we don’t know exactly how much potential the next-generation Steam Deck has.

“It’s important to us, and we’ve tried to be really clear, that we’re not doing the annual cadence. We’re not going to do a bump every year. There’s no reason to do that. From our perspective, it’s not really fair to our customers to come out with something that’s incrementally better so quickly,” Yang says.

So don’t expect a new model anytime soon…
