Life is Strange Co-Creator Defends New Developers of the Franchise

Michel Koch believes that there is unjustified criticism of the current developers of Life is Strange, Deck Nine, on the Internet.

Why are players angry? They don’t like the way the new Life is Strange episode, Double Exposure, handles the main relationship from the first episode. It’s been a long time since 2015, so here’s a quick recap: Max Caulfield (who also stars in Life is Strange: Double Exposure) teamed up with his old girlfriend, Chloe Price, who we decided could die in order to save Arcadia Bay, a small town where the game takes place.

Koch, who is the co-creator of Life is Strange and creative director of Don’t Nod, responded. He wrote on Twitter: “Since the release of [Life is Strange: Double Exposure] I’ve seen a lot of tension and hateful messages against the developers at Deck Nine. I haven’t played the game yet, and I have no idea where they’re taking the story. But what I do know is that nothing justifies hating people for the way they wrote their game! You can be disappointed, you can want different stories for the characters you love, or different stories. In the end, creation is hard and very subjective, and if you do not like Double Exposure’s story, it does not erase what you imagined.

From what I read, I think we would not have written things the same way, but I felt the same way about the comics and [Life is Strange:] Before the Storm, and I kind of accepted it. I’m pretty sure I won’t recognize my characters when I play the full game, but that’s inevitable with different writers,” Koch wrote.

Chloe will not be appearing in Life is Strange: Double Exposure. We can choose which ending of the first Life is Strange we consider authentic (Sacrifice Chloe or Arcadia Bay), and it seems that the couple has since broken up. But somehow this doesn’t affect the game’s results, as there are currently 777 reviews on Steam, and Deck Nine is in the very positive category…

We have to agree with Koch: Don’t Nod is no longer working on the IP, so the change had to be made…
