Modder Redherring32 shares the full process for those interested in replicating his achievement.
Many gamers are finding ways to extend the life of older systems, even with access to the latest releases like Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth or Black Myth: Wukong. Consequently, stories abound, such as a fan investing €1,500 to turn his original Xbox into a powerhouse. Now, a YouTuber has made history by crafting the first-ever portable Xbox.
As highlighted in a recent post by TechSpot, modder Redherring32 modified the original Xbox to create a portable device. Using the console’s motherboard, he avoided emulators or alternate versions. He also designed custom PCBs, giving the device a refined look that mirrors the original console’s style.
Features of the First Portable Xbox
In an original post on X, the modder explains that his portable console includes a 9-inch display with a 480p resolution and a 100W USB-C charging system for its lithium battery. The setup integrates a fully functional Xbox controller, which took him four months of dedication, involving redesigning and trimming the motherboard to fit the portable format.
Additionally, only specific motherboard models were compatible with the project, prolonging the build time. Looking ahead, the modder aims to incorporate Wi-Fi 6 to enable wireless Xbox Live gameplay. He has made the entire project open-source, offering guides, schematics, and PCB files for those eager to build their own version.
