Resident Evil Creator Calls RE4 Remake a “Masterpiece”: ‘A Fully Realized Story from My Half-*ssed Two-Week Draft

The original Resident Evil 4 stands as a landmark in gaming history. It has aged gracefully, and few anticipated that the 2023 remake would need to alter much to retain its legendary status. However, the Resident Evil franchise’s creator, Shinji Mikami, has openly praised the remake, claiming it not only meets but elevates the original’s success in almost every way.

Shinji Mikami describes the Resident Evil 4 Remake as a significant improvement on the original’s “half-assed” story, a draft he admits to creating in only two weeks. Mikami praised the devs for refining intricate details, from the nuanced combat mechanics to character development.

In an interview with IGN, Mikami emphasized that understanding the original’s core appeal was critical to making a successful remake. “Saying the devs understood it is an understatement. They showed a deep understanding of the characters and their interactions. They grasped each character’s core,” Mikami said in the interview.

Shinji also believes the remake enhanced the original’s dialogue, storyline, and visuals, creating an experience that both newcomers and seasoned fans would find captivating.

Since launch, RE4 Remake has received critical acclaim for its modernized gameplay and graphics, with many players agreeing that Mikami’s praise is well-deserved. But what do you think of his views on the remake?
