The “face” of Bethesda Game Studios, who was working on the new Indiana Jones game as a producer, didn’t really know who would play the hated treasure hunter at first…
Joel (The Last of Us), Kanji Tatsumi (Persona 4). These are just two examples of the many people Troy Baker has voiced in games, but you can also hear his voice in cartoons and other animated programs if you watch them in English. He will also be voicing Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, but if Howard had his way, he wouldn’t have! Howard told Rolling Stone.
In January, it was announced that Troy Baker would replace Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones in MachineGames. Jerk Gustaffson, co-founder of the studio and director of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, said that he brings out the charm and humor that is so characteristic of the character. WCCFTech echoes a similar sentiment, as the site had the chance to check out the last major (timed!) Xbox exclusive of the year.
Howard has wanted to make an Indiana Jones game for a long time. He was also looking for someone to play the protagonist, but saw that Troy Baker didn’t fit his concept. This was discussed in more detail by Entertainment Weekly: when Baker was first introduced to Howard via Zoom, Howard openly stated that Baker’s face was not what they were looking for, and Baker confirmed this afterwards! After that, Howard and MachineGames conducted hundreds of interviews, but they all chose Baker.
Baker did his best to get the part right, training with stunt actor Doc Duhame with an authentic Indy whip to make it look natural: “I better know how to ride a motorcycle, ride a horse, crack a whip…. Because if you don’t believe me when I’m just standing there holding the whip, you’re probably not going to believe me when you’re actually the one cracking the whip,” Baker said.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will arrive on Xbox Series and PC on December 9 (it will also be available on Game Pass), with the PlayStation 5 getting it in spring 2025.
