It’s (almost) a new Monkey Island, and the best thing of all is that you can play it for free. A love letter to the series. The Booze of Monkey Island draws inspiration from the original work with a new story.
The Monkey Island video game series, developed by LucasArts, is one of the most beloved franchises in the point-and-click adventure genre. Launched in 1990 with The Secret of Monkey Island, the magnum opus by Ron Gilbert, Dave Grossman, and Tim Schafer set a benchmark in the genre. Though today it may be “coffee for coffee drinkers,” fans who remember it can enjoy a free spiritual sequel: The Booze of Monkey Island, a short adventure that pays homage to the ’90s classic.
Over the years, Monkey Island has seen multiple sequels and adaptations that kept the spirit of the original alive, even if the visuals and gameplay have evolved. In 2022, the series saw a resurgence with Return to Monkey Island, which continued the story of the second game, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, though this wasn’t the end.
Meanwhile, fans’ passion for the series has led to their own projects, such as The Booze of Monkey Island, a single-player game that both honors the Monkey Island universe and offers an original story. The Booze of Monkey Island explores the spirit of the original work with humor-filled narratives and new challenges, all completely free.
Expanding the Story, Not Profiting
According to the author, this small playable experience is free, as it’s not intended to make a profit from Ron Gilbert’s work but to offer gratitude by expanding the story. The Booze of Monkey Island is available on Windows, Linux, and Mac. However, it’s worth noting that this is a long-term project, and what’s currently available could be considered as “early access” that will be expanded in the coming months.
The Creator of Monkey Island is Still Making Games
At 60, veteran developer Ron Gilbert is still working on games at Terrible Toybox, including a project described as a cross between “classic Zelda” and “Diablo.” Though the title remains unnamed, it’s anticipated to release in early 2025. Early images show a vibrant pixel-art adventure blending elements from Zelda and Diablo. Gilbert has shared updates on social media, revealing that Elissa Black has joined as a quest designer, promising engaging gameplay and storyline.
