PlayStation Portal was born to allow gamers to enjoy their PS5 games remotely. But the truth is that you had to turn on the PS5 console and use PS Link to play the game. This is one of its limitations and drawbacks; players missed being able to enjoy PS Portal via streaming video games through the cloud. Sony then responded to the criticism by stating that PS Portal was “not designed to be profitable”…
One executive stated months ago that “there are no technical limitations preventing PlayStation Portal from streaming cloud games.” The good news is that they have finally implemented the ability to stream games on this device. According to an announcement published on the PlayStation Blog, the PS Portal was updated yesterday to include cloud gaming, allowing access to a catalogue of 120 games.
You no longer need a PS5 to play PlayStation Portal
The only catch is that you have to be a PS Plus Premium member to access this feature in beta form. This way, we will no longer need a PS5 or its switched-on status to play the 120 games included in PS Plus Premium. Titles such as e.g. Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales, Ghost of Tsushima, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, etc.
We can play them in 1080p resolution and 60 FPS, as long as our connection is stable.
In addition, DualSense functions (haptic feedback and adaptive triggers) and cloud saves will also be available. New features such as 3D sound, game trials, streaming of games purchased from the PS Store, group voice chat and game invitations, the Create button and in-game shops may come soon. As you might have guessed, the playable games so far are PS5 games; PS3 and PS4 games are not supported. Maybe in the future, we will be able to enjoy everything that is missing from this beta; we just have to wait. Last but not least, Sony mentions that this new PS Portal update has tweaks to improve the audio experience in addition to streaming.
