Why Is the Minecraft Movie Live-Action? The Director Responds to Criticism

MOVIE NEWS – The Minecraft movie’s director has addressed player criticism of the first trailer, saying he understands the mixed opinions. The second trailer has softened some of the initial backlash. The movie is set to premiere on April 4, 2025.

When the first trailer for Minecraft was first uploaded to YouTube, the community expected a much more faithful visual style to Mojang’s iconic sandbox game. While the film’s aesthetic seems to stray from Minecraft’s signature blocky design, it promises a humorous tone throughout, filled with references to objects, characters, creatures, and more.

The Minecraft movie’s director is aware of the criticism and admits he understands it to some extent. Jared Hess, alongside producer Torfi Frans Olafsson, who oversees the Microsoft-owned franchise, spoke with IGN about the community’s response. “We were prepared for anything,” Hess explained. “We knew that this game means many different things to many people.”

The Minecraft Movie Criticism: Why Not Animated?

“We knew that no matter how we presented the project, there would be varying opinions on what people expected and what they wanted it to be. Everyone brings a unique, personal connection to the game,” Hess said (via Kotaku). One major point of criticism he discussed is the decision to make the film live-action. “That was one of the comments in response to the trailer. ‘Why is it live-action? Why isn’t it animated?’ I think a lot of people were expecting that,” he noted regarding Mojang’s sandbox title.

Minecraft Movie to Premiere on April 4, 2025

“The fact that it was live-action—with real characters and physical sets—didn’t feel right to some because they’ve spent so much time imagining the game in their own way. They’ve also watched a lot of content, both from us and the community. We’ve created story modes and animated content before, and there’s plenty of that available,” Hess said. While some fans may not be entirely satisfied, Hess emphasized that he personally loves the trailer.

“This movie has been in development for a very long time. Many of the people who will watch it weren’t even born when the first contracts were signed, and from the start, it was always envisioned as a live-action project,” he concluded.
