The Wicked star told us what life is like in a Petri dish

MOVIE NEWS – For as long as she can remember, Ariana Grande, who plays the lead role in Wicked, one of this season’s biggest movie sensations, has been receiving harsh criticism for her appearance on Cynthia Erivo‘s page. The actress started out as a child star on the Disney Channel, and has been receiving sarcastic comments ever since – and the stream of vitriolic comments has only increased since she’s become one of the biggest pop stars in the world.

“I’ve been subjected to this since I was 16 or 17,” the actress said in an interview during her Wicked promotional tour. “It’s like being a test subject in a Petri dish. I’m constantly being asked why I look this way and not that way, and then if I change something, that’s what happens.”

As is common in the entertainment industry, the actress has changed her appearance several times over the past decade and a half, each time causing a lot of people to freak out. She says that despite thinking she would get used to it over time, she was disappointed. “It’s really hard to defend yourself in all that noise. It’s incredibly uncomfortable, regardless of who’s saying it and how mean they’re trying to be. It can be really frustrating to go to a Thanksgiving dinner and have one of the grandmas clap their hands and say, ‘Oh my gosh, why are you so skinny?’ or ‘Where did you get all these pounds?'”

Grande has been in the news lately after her TikTok videos sparked a heated social debate about how thin she is, and how sick she is. Commentators share ideas that the actress is not eating properly, is high on her anti-depressant medication and is generally very down on herself.

Wicked is the film version of one of the world’s most successful musicals – it comes in two parts, the first part is already in cinemas. The production broke several viewing and revenue records in a matter of days, and even critics love it.
