ChatGPT has scared trillion-dollar tech companies into developing their own services and not getting left behind in the race for generative (content-creating) artificial intelligence. This has led the Cupertino company to create Apple Intelligence, and although it’s lagging behind, CEO Tim Cook says it’s OK if they’re not first this time. In an interview with Wired, he says that what matters is that they are the best.

Cook was asked quite a few questions, and they mostly focused on generative AI and Apple Intelligence. Cook often plays around with devices and services, so he also said what he likes best about Apple Intelligence: “We’re an email-based company, and I get huge numbers of emails from users, employees, partners, and so on. Having it summarize author responses is a game changer, and having it prioritize things for you so you don’t have to do your usual triage. Then, of course, there are fun things like Image Playground,” Cook said.

Apple may have made a mistake by not investing in OpenAI (an opportunity not missed by Microsoft), which has since become a leader among generative AI companies. Cook was asked why they had not invested in the company. They did not ignore the existence of the company, but it would have been a rare thing to do. He also highlighted ARM, which was important in the early years as it helped them grow into what Apple is today: “I’m not saying we never looked at it. I’m just saying it would be a rare move on our part to do it. We did ARM at the time. Who else did we do? We did one or two others. ARM was pretty good,” Cook added.

Apple Intelligence may be improved in several ways in the future. They are working with Nvidia on ReDrafter technology that can speed up text generation for large language models (LLM), they are using M4 Ultra chips in their service servers, and they are developing an AI chip called Baltra with Broadcom…
