Ex-Developer Suggests Bethesda Game Studios Needs a New Engine! [VIDEO]

He says the Creation Engine would be better off if Todd Howard’s studio left it behind to develop with Unreal Engine 5 (they wouldn’t be alone, as CD Projekt RED also dropped REDengine).

2011’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was the first game to use the creation engine. Later, Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 ran on it, before Starfield was released in 2023 with Creation Engine 2. Despite the new version number, fans say that many of the bugs seen in previous titles remain in the game. The Creation Engine is based on Gamebryo, which also powers The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3.

Nate Purkeypile, former Bethesda Game Studios (BGS) artist, spoke to Kiwi Talkz in the video embedded below about how he thinks the studio would be better off switching to Epic Games’ technology. Purkeypile has worked on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Fallout, and Starfield, and has had the opportunity to develop on Unreal Engine 5 since leaving BGS. He believes that, like Halo Studios (formerly 343 Industries), they would benefit from a move to Unreal Engine 5, but is highly skeptical that it will happen.

In Starfield, BGS spent a lot of time making sure that the rendering and animation systems were mostly in good working order, which hindered development. This is probably a kind of mandatory bad vote due to the switch to Creation Engine 2. Now that the engine is done, BGS’s next game (Fallout 5?) should be easier to make, but the studio may be at a disadvantage here due to the technology’s shortcomings. But Unreal Engine 5 has its problems, too: for example, the imperfect performance and tearing in Silent Hill 2 Remake was…

As stubborn as Todd Howard is, he certainly won’t change engines…
