Sleeping Dogs Movie Officially Greenlit – Shang-Chi’s Simu Liu to Star as Wei Shen

MOZI HÍREK – Sleeping Dogs is one of those hidden gems that, despite never reaching major commercial success, built a loyal fanbase captivated by its immersive open-world Hong Kong setting. Its mix of action, drama, and martial arts earned it the reputation of “GTA’s competitor.” The industry always recognized the potential for a sequel, but it never came to life.

Now, Sleeping Dogs is heading to Hollywood. Reports confirm that the movie has been officially greenlit, with Shang-Chi star Simu Liu in the lead role. According to IGN, Liu will portray Wei Shen while also serving as the movie’s producer.

For years, rumors about a Sleeping Dogs adaptation would surface and disappear, until the project was seemingly shelved. However, in recent days, a new initiative has emerged, spearheaded by Marvel star Simu Liu, who is determined to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen. The Shang-Chi actor is investing his time and resources into making this dream a reality: a Sleeping Dogs movie that taps into the franchise’s unrealized potential.

Just a few days ago, reports surfaced that Liu was actively working to secure the rights to Sleeping Dogs, with hopes of not only producing a movie but possibly reviving the game series in the future. IGN has now confirmed that the film is officially in development. Liu will take on the role of Wei Shen, an undercover cop infiltrating Hong Kong’s most dangerous gangs, and will also be involved in the production.

As for additional details, Sleeping Dogs will be brought to life by Story Kitchen, while the rights remain with Square Enix. Further updates are expected in the coming weeks, but Story Kitchen has a solid track record in video game adaptations. The studio was behind the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, Netflix’s Tomb Raider animated series, and is currently developing adaptations of It Takes Two, Just Cause, and Streets of Rage.
