Elden Ring: Nightreign – FromSoftware’s roguelike isn’t chasing trends but refining the soulslike formula

Elden Ring: Nightreign isn’t just another trend-chaser—FromSoftware is making a roguelike to condense the soulslike gameplay. “To achieve that sense of accomplishment, we felt we needed some new mechanics and elements,” says Junya Ishizaki, director of Elden Ring: Nightreign.

One of the biggest releases of the year is set to be a game that aims to sell millions of copies while following in the footsteps of the Elden Ring IP. FromSoftware’s latest project, Elden Ring: Nightreign, is a roguelike that has captivated players with its cooperative gameplay approach. While the Japanese studio’s idea has drawn interest, some initially speculated that FromSoftware was attempting to turn Elden Ring into a live-service model—claims that were quickly debunked.

In a recent interview with PC Gamer, Elden Ring: Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki clarified that incorporating roguelike elements wasn’t about jumping on a trend but about addressing key design challenges. He explained that the team aimed to condense the RPG experience, blending boss fights and character customization within the treacherous world of the Lands Between.

“The goal was to condense the experience—the RPG elements, exploration, character building, and leveling up,” Ishizaki explains (via GamesRadar). “We wanted everything to feel interconnected and to culminate in a boss battle, but in a more concentrated way. To achieve this sense of accomplishment that you wouldn’t find in Elden Ring or our previous titles, we felt we needed new mechanics and elements to bring something fresh to the experience.”

FromSoftware isn’t following the crowd

“We’ve never had the stance of ‘let’s not do what other companies are doing’ or ‘let’s avoid following trends.’ So we didn’t see this as a trend but rather as interesting gameplay elements that would work well in our session-based multiplayer experience,” he concludes.

The Elden Ring: Nightreign beta kicks off on February 14, meaning players will soon get their hands on the game and share their impressions.
