PSN Outage Worldwide: Sony Still Searching for a Fix

PlayStation Network (PSN) has been down for nearly 18 hours worldwide—what has Sony said? Online services for PS5 and PS4, along with access to the PS Plus library, remain unavailable. Sony is aware of the issue and is working on a solution, but so far, the situation has not improved.

Few things are more frustrating than slow download speeds, Wi-Fi issues, and, to top it all off, losing access to your favorite games right when the weekend begins. That’s exactly what’s happening for PS4 and PS5 players right now. Since early this morning in Spain, PlayStation Network services have been down across much of the world, leaving millions of players without access to Sony’s online features and unable to download or play PlayStation Plus titles. This marks the second outage in less than a year for the Japanese company.

Unlike the previous outage, which happened midweek, this one comes at a terrible time—half the world was gearing up for a weekend of gaming, while the other was just settling in for a Friday night gaming session. Tens of thousands of gaming hours have gone to waste—at least for now—after PSN crashed. The outage is impacting account management, online multiplayer, PS4 and PS5 social features, the PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Video.

17+ Hours Without PSN: The Second Major Outage in Five Months

Reports suggest the outage began around 1 AM CEST, though Downdetector data indicates issues started slightly earlier, just after midnight. At its peak, nearly 70,000 outage reports were logged in the U.S. alone, though the trend has been slowing over the past few hours.

As expected, social media and forums like Reddit have exploded with complaints from frustrated players. Many have reported being unable to access their friends lists, view their trophies, or change their online status on their PlayStation 5 consoles.

So far, Sony has not issued a formal statement beyond its promise to restore services “as soon as possible.” The issue might be resolved by morning in Spain, but globally, concerns remain high. And as we mentioned earlier, this isn’t the first time PSN has gone down over the past year. Back in October, the network was down for roughly eight hours, while a partial service interruption was recorded in May.

Meanwhile, thousands of players have voiced their frustration, prompting PlayStation to finally respond. Sony has now begun removing “junk” games from the PlayStation Store.

For now, all we can do is wait and hope Sony gets the issue resolved soon. theGeek will update this article as soon as the service is restored.
