SEGA has announced that it will release fewer new games in 2025, but plans to make significant investments in its flagship franchises: Sonic, Persona, and Like a Dragon. Studios such as Atlus, Sonic Team, and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio are expected to expand through new hires and even potential acquisitions.
SEGA has been in exceptional form in recent years, further solidifying itself as a major force in the gaming industry. The rise of the Persona series, the continued expansion of the Like a Dragon franchise, and the ongoing success of both Sonic games and movies have kept the company at the forefront. SEGA has mastered the art of transmedia expansion, reaching wider audiences through films, merchandise, and series.
2024 was an outstanding year for SEGA, with major releases like Sonic X Shadow Generations, Metaphor: ReFantazio, and Persona 3 Reload. However, many players are wondering what 2025 will bring for the Japanese gaming giant. The company has now confirmed that for the next fiscal year (April 2025 – March 2026), it will reduce the number of full game releases, instead opting for a more selective, quality-driven strategy.
While the volume of new games will decrease, SEGA intends to strengthen its biggest franchises—Sonic, Persona, and Like a Dragon. This effort will involve major investments in key studios such as Sonic Team, Atlus, and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, which could lead to an increase in hiring or even acquisitions to further bolster their capabilities. “We expect the number of new game releases to be lower than in this fiscal year,” SEGA stated (via VGC).
SEGA Games Already Announced
A few days ago, SEGA showcased a new trailer for its upcoming racing title, Sonic Racing Crossworlds, which will soon be available on all platforms. Additionally, the company recently unveiled a visually stunning Metroidvania, marking the return of the iconic Shinobi series. Late last year, SEGA introduced Project Century and confirmed the revival of several classic IPs, including Virtua Fighter, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage.
