Sony Santa Monica Studio is not giving much cause for optimism when it comes to rumors about the 20th anniversary of the God of War franchise…
Many God of War fans were hoping that the anniversary event would finally unveil a rumored remaster of the Greek saga, but it seems that Santa Monica Studio has no such plans. The series (starring Kratos) is one of the most popular PlayStation franchises, and one of the longest running. It started in 2005, back on the PS2. The first installments used Greek mythology as a narrative backdrop, and the last Greek God of War game was God of War: Ascension on PS3, released in 2013. The reboot came in 2018, when the franchise moved to Norse mythology. However, none of the Greek God of War games are playable on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, with the exception of God of War III…
It’s no surprise, then, that fans were hoping Sony would modernize the early installments of the franchise to bring the older games to a new audience on PlayStation 5. A credible insider, Jeff Grubb, said a few weeks ago that they were going to announce a Greek-era collection during the 20th anniversary of God of War, which got the audience even more hyped… and this was nailed down by Sony Santa Monica Studio, who refuted the whole thing!
Pantheons collide! We’re so excited to bring a selection of the Greek and Norse cast for this God of War 20th Anniversary panel where we’ll be reflecting on the past two decades of the series 🤩
With such a stellar lineup and all the anticipation we’ve seen around the… https://t.co/eNEJPsfMyO

On Twitter, the studio recently announced that they will be hosting a panel with various voice actors who lent their talents to the God of War series, as well as an art exhibit in Los Angeles to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the franchise. There’s also a half-hearted statement that there are no plans to make any announcements, which essentially rules out the possibility of Kratos’ adventures appearing in remastered form… but many were surprised at how low-key Santa Monica Studio was. They’re hoping the announcement will come via the PlayStation Blog.
Doesn’t sound too good, but who knows, maybe it’s just a distraction to surprise us.
