MOVIE NEWS – Following the box office disappointment of Snow White, Disney has officially put the brakes on another one of its planned live-action remakes. Rapunzel and her Tangled universe will have to wait a bit longer before coming to life.
Disney appears increasingly dissatisfied with the recent performance of its live-action adaptations based on animated classics. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the entertainment giant behind Marvel and Star Wars has halted production on the planned remake of Tangled, the 2010 animated musical loosely inspired by the Rapunzel fairytale. That original film grossed over $500 million globally, making it a modern hit in the Disney catalog.
Although not directly linked to Snow White’s failure, the decision to suspend the Rapunzel project closely follows the poor theatrical run of the film starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot. After two weeks in cinemas, the film has earned just $146.5 million—far below expectations and with little upward momentum anticipated.
Given that Snow White‘s production budget is estimated between $240 and $270 million, the financial loss seems inevitable. Unsurprisingly, Disney has opted to pause, reassess the live-action strategy, and consider the path forward more carefully—especially in light of other remakes currently in development or awaiting release in the near future.
Lilo & Stitch is still moving forward
The next remake on Disney’s schedule is Lilo & Stitch, set to premiere on May 23. Early reactions to the film’s trailers and promotional materials have been far more favorable than those for Snow White, offering a glimmer of hope that Disney’s live-action efforts could regain momentum. Another major project on the horizon is the live-action Moana, scheduled for 2026. With the animated sequel’s strong box office performance earlier this year, expectations are high.
Rapunzel on hold, for now
It’s becoming clear that Disney needs to scale back both the pace and the budget of its live-action productions. While some of Snow White’s costs were attributed to external factors, the end result remains an overblown expenditure. For now, the Rapunzel remake has been shelved indefinitely, though not permanently canceled. A streaming release date for Snow White on Disney+ has yet to be announced, but fans can still find the original Tangled animated film on the platform for a nostalgic revisit.
