MOVIE NEWS – “I’ve never done anything like this before,” says Amber Midthunder, the female lead in the action comedy Novocain. That is, she has never played a romantic heroine before, even though she already has a few important roles behind her. Among these, the critically and commercially successful Prey stands out, where she faced the extraterrestrial Predator himself, and even survived the encounter that was so fatal for others.
Novocain is also not without its brutal scenes. The unbridled violence is counterbalanced by the romantic plot, where the character of Amber sets off an avalanche of events: she is kidnapped during a bank robbery, so her lover, Nathan (Jack Quaid), does everything he can to free her. Since the sympathetic young man does not feel pain due to a genetic mutation, he has a chance to defeat the bad guys in bloody showdowns.
“After previous warrior roles, how did you stop yourself from beating up anyone in Novokain?” – The Standard asked the 27-year-old actress. “This was Jack’s job, and I was happy to hand him over this otherwise honorable task,” replied Midthunder. “There are so many rough fights in this film that the story only works if the main couple can remain likeable and realistic figures. This touching love story nicely frames the incredible showdowns, and we hope it can gently remind the viewer that everything is a little off, but we still have to come back to reality.”
On the Rotten Tomatoes review aggregator, the audience approval rating is 85 percent, with the justification that Novokain provides painless entertainment, and the chemistry between the main characters really works.
