GTA 6 has officially been delayed! Rockstar apologized for the setback but confirmed the open-world blockbuster will now launch in May 2026.
Despite months of speculation surrounding a 2025 release, Take-Two had previously promised that the game would arrive within the first half of the 2025–26 fiscal year, and Rockstar Games repeatedly assured fans the title would hit before New Year’s. However, the reality is now official: Grand Theft Auto VI has been delayed to 2026, though at least the company revealed its exact release date.
In a statement shared via Twitter, Rockstar announced that the game is now targeting a release on May 26, 2026. While many were expecting to dive into the open world next year, the studio opted to take more time to refine what it calls one of the most ambitious games in its history — a delay that will no doubt benefit other studios planning their own holiday releases.

Rockstar Apologizes, Promises Even Greater Polish
In the open letter, Rockstar admitted that the delay could be disappointing for many, but added that fan enthusiasm has been “truly humbling” for the entire development team. “We want to thank you for your support and patience as we work to finish the game,” the studio wrote.
They also reiterated their unwavering commitment to quality: every Rockstar title strives to meet the highest possible standard — and GTA VI will be no exception. “We hope you understand that we need this additional time to deliver the level of quality you expect and deserve,” the statement read.
“We hope you understand that we need this additional time,” Rockstar added.
Such delays are nothing new when it comes to high-profile projects, especially in a market that demands ever greater polish, stability, and storytelling finesse. Rockstar has a long history of pushing back releases — GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 were both delayed, and both ended up being critical and commercial hits.
And as we’ve seen, the delay could come as a relief to many developers hoping to avoid clashing with Rockstar’s behemoth. This summer is stacked already, with Lost Soul Aside, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, and Mafia: The Old Country all aiming for late 2025 launches. Now, the focus will likely shift to the first half of 2026, as the industry adjusts its plans accordingly.
