MOVIE NEWS – Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be a nostalgic dream for longtime Marvel fans, reuniting familiar faces from the original X-Men films while stacking its lineup with iconic characters from across the superhero spectrum. But the blast from the past doesn’t stop at the cast — a veteran behind the camera is also making a return.
Veteran cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel is reuniting with the Russo Brothers to shoot Avengers: Doomsday, following their collaboration on 2021’s Cherry. Sigel’s extensive resume includes visually acclaimed films like X-Men: Days of Future Past, Drive, Da 5 Bloods, and even the musical Bohemian Rhapsody—though don’t expect any Queen songs this time. With his deep connection to the X-Men universe and a prior working relationship with the Russos, Sigel is a perfect choice. His involvement also raises hopes that more alumni from Days of Future Past might join the party.
So far, confirmed returns from the Fox X-Men era include Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, James Marsden as Cyclops, and Channing Tatum as Gambit. More mutant cameos are possible, with Hugh Jackman almost certainly back as Wolverine, and Halle Berry potentially returning as Storm after a long hiatus. There’s also a chance the younger Days of Future Past cast could appear, though the spotlight seems to be on the original generation.
Did Chris Claremont Spill the Beans?
Warning: Potential spoilers for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars ahead.
Last week, legendary Marvel Comics writer Chris Claremont attended Alabama’s Pop Culture Expo and may have let slip a few major plot points. Claremont went into surprising detail about what he’s heard, sharing that Famke Janssen is back as Jean Grey and Chris Evans will appear as a dark alternate version of Captain America. While much of it aligns with existing rumors, some details were oddly specific — the kind only insiders might know.
If Janssen is returning, it could signal even more X-Men characters joining the story — especially since the script is reportedly still being revised as casting deals are finalized.
The confirmed cast includes: Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm / Invisible Woman), Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Letitia Wright (Shuri / Black Panther), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Wyatt Russell (John Walker / U.S. Agent), Tenoch Huerta Mejía (Namor), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm / The Thing), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Kelsey Grammer (Beast), Lewis Pullman (Sentry), Danny Ramirez (Falcon), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm / Human Torch), David Harbour (Red Guardian), Winston Duke (M’Baku), Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), James Marsden (Cyclops), Channing Tatum (Gambit), Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards / Mr. Fantastic), and Robert Downey Jr. (Doctor Doom).
