The Ciri Face “Controversy” Returns – CD Projekt RED Shuts Down The Witcher 4 Debate (Again)

Once again, CD Projekt RED is addressing a pointless uproar over Ciri’s face: the developer has restated in no uncertain terms that the Witcher 4 protagonist looks exactly as she did before. “Ciri’s face is a one-to-one copy of The Witcher 3’s model, simply updated with new tech,” the studio confirms.

For more than a decade, The Witcher series has defined what a Western RPG can be. After the record-breaking success of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and its 60 million copies sold, CD Projekt RED is determined to raise the bar even higher for Witcher 4. The newest trailer—unveiled at Epic Games’ State of Unreal—sent fans into a frenzy, with many thrilled at the prospect of playing as Ciri. But while most celebrate, some have latched onto a “controversy” that barely exists.

CD Projekt RED has now confirmed that Ciri’s face in the latest Witcher 4 trailer is identical to her look in The Witcher 3, with just two minor tweaks that don’t alter her features. Speaking to Kotaku, a studio spokesperson emphasized: “It’s the same character model used in the 2024 trailer.”

Ciri’s Face Hasn’t Changed

“Ciri’s face is a replica of the Witcher 3 model, but optimized for the latest MetaHuman tech,” said a CD Projekt RED developer. “We made two tiny tweaks for animation: the eyebrows are slightly higher, and the eye area is more relaxed—the latter was visible in the trailer but has since been reverted.” The studio insists there’s been no real change since the 2024 debut trailer.

Of course, social media is ablaze with the usual nitpicking—some say Ciri “looks worse” than before, others think a new brow shape “breaks immersion.” Despite CD Projekt’s years of work building richer, more stunning Witcher worlds, there’s always a crowd focused on minute details like the angle of Ciri’s jaw. In fact, months ago, the developer already confirmed in a behind-the-scenes video that Ciri’s face had not changed at all from previous designs.
