Four N64 Games Coming Soon to Nintendo Switch Online?

The Big N has presumably already determined when these four games will be added to the paid online service.

There’s quite a rumor about the Nintendo 64 Switch Online Expansion Pack, even though the evidence is right in front of us. Some fans have discovered that it’s possible to identify the games hidden in the background of the Nintendo 64 app. While it’s easy to believe that the blurry background is just a placeholder, it turns out these are the box arts of four real Nintendo 64 games. However, the fact that these games appear in the background doesn’t necessarily mean the service will add them…

The biggest identified title is the original Super Smash Bros. It’s one of the few legendary titles created by Satoru Iwata and Masahiro Sakurai. Although Nintendo has released games in this franchise for every console generation, the original has never been re-released on Virtual Console or in any other format. Donkey Kong 64 was developed by Rare. This was their last DK game and the first 3D title in the series. It was released on the Wii U Virtual Console, but it’s overdue for another appearance.

Glover is a unique 3D platformer where you control a disembodied hand guiding a ball, instead of the usual cartoon mascot. Piko Interactive surprised everyone with a remake earlier this year, so Nintendo knows who to talk to about a rerelease. Forsaken is a 6DOF (six degrees of freedom) shooter. It received a remaster from Nightdive Studios, but interestingly, the Nintendo Switch missed out. Nintendo might need to coordinate with Nightdive or their parent company, Atari SA, to add this game to their library.

Fans may be frustrated with how slowly Nintendo is expanding the N64 catalog. One reason could be that Nintendo doesn’t want to overload players by filling up storage space. Nintendo might already have these games scheduled for Switch Online, which could look especially impressive on Switch 2. For now, though, we just have to wait and see when these rereleases happen.
