Stop Killing Games: Even the EP’s Vice President Supports the Petition!

One of the vice presidents of the European Parliament has publicly endorsed the Stop Killing Games initiative. This could be an important moment for the initiative.

Nicolae Ștefănuță, a Vice-President of the European Parliament, has publicly expressed his support for Stop Killing Games, marking a significant victory for the newly launched EU citizens’ initiative. On July 12, Stefanuță posted a video on his Instagram Story announcing that he had signed the Stop Killing Games petition and planned to continue supporting the movement. In the video, he said: “I stand with the people who started this citizens’ initiative. I signed it, and I will continue to help them. Once a game is sold, it belongs to the customer, not the company.” While he can only do so much for the movement at the moment, his support could be crucial if the initiative makes it to the European Parliament.

As a member of the European Parliament, he will be able to argue the case for the movement if the issue is debated. Other EU politicians, who may not have paid much attention to Stop Killing Games before, will certainly pay attention now. Although the road from a citizens’ initiative to actual legislation is long and not guaranteed, Stop Killing Games is on the right track and has gained momentum. The initiative has already reached the one million signatures needed to become a formal citizens’ initiative but still needs to reach the minimum threshold in some EU countries. Once it has reached these thresholds, the signatures will be verified before the initiative can meet with the European Commission.

Just a week after the Video Games Europe lobby group issued a disappointing statement opposing Stop Killing Games and defending the practice the movement wants to end, Ștefănuță offered his words of support. While Video Games Europe may not be listening to real gamers, Ștefănuță clearly is and will hopefully advocate strongly for Stop Killing Games in the European Parliament.
