Microsoft Finally Abandons One of Its Biggest Dreams After 12 Years – A Key Service Disappears from Xbox and the Microsoft Store

MOVIE NEWS – After 12 years, Microsoft has officially ended movie and TV sales in the Microsoft Store and on Xbox consoles. While the company spent years building up its multimedia empire, it is now giving up on this ambition for good – users will only have access to content they have already purchased.

Over the past decade, Microsoft has worked hard to make the Xbox and Microsoft Store not just a platform for video games, but a full-fledged entertainment hub where users could buy or rent movies and TV shows. However, this ambitious plan has ended after 12 years: the company has completely shut down its Movies & TV service, so from now on, no new movies or TV shows can be purchased or rented in the Microsoft Store or on Xbox consoles.

The Era of Movie Purchasing on Microsoft Is Over

According to Windows Central, starting July 18, 2025, users can no longer buy new movie or TV content on the Microsoft website, the Xbox Store, or the Microsoft Store on Windows devices. Although Microsoft promises that previously purchased movies and shows will remain accessible through the Movies & TV app, the purchase option has been entirely removed, and the buy button has disappeared from the application.

Microsoft originally envisioned a complex media hub including movies, series, and music, but this mission is now officially over. The process of shutting down began as early as 2017, when the company ended its Grove Music streaming service. Now, all options to buy or rent movies and TV shows are gone as well.

What Happens to Your Purchased Movies and Shows?

Interestingly, users will not receive refunds for content purchased recently, and Microsoft emphasizes that all previously bought videos, movies, and TV shows will only be accessible through the Movies & TV app. There’s no way to transfer content to another platform, unlike the Movies Anywhere service available in the U.S. This means that users—even in Hungary—can only enjoy their old purchases within the Microsoft ecosystem.
