In the United States, the Nintendo Switch 2 has achieved a feat that the PlayStation 4 couldn’t manage a decade ago.
It has become the fastest-selling gaming hardware in US history. According to Mat Piscatella, Circana’s managing director and analyst, it decisively beat the previous record holder, the PlayStation 4, which sold 1.1 million units at its debut, with 1.6 million units sold in the US. Piscatella confirmed that the Switch 2 is firmly in first place for June 2025 and showed the console’s launch impact on the gaming industry this month. Hardware spending increased 249% compared to June of last year. The Nintendo Switch 2 was the month’s best-selling product in terms of both units sold and dollars spent, surpassing the PlayStation 5. However, the PS5 remains the best-selling hardware in both categories so far in 2025. It will be interesting to see if that changes before the end of the year.
Another significant aspect of the Switch 2’s success is that 82% of US buyers in June purchased Mario Kart World, either as part of the bundle or as a separate physical game. The second best-selling game on Nintendo platforms last month was Cyberpunk 2077, followed by Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild were among the top five best-selling games on Nintendo platforms last month.
Other June hits include Elden Ring: Nightreign, which continues to sell well, reaching number eight on the annual top list and number one at the end of June. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach debuted at number two but has yet to crack the annual top 20. It is, however, the top-selling game on the PlayStation 5 in the US. Stellar Blade is another notable entry on the sales charts. It jumped to second place on the PC sales chart and from 185th to fifth on the overall sales chart in June 2025 thanks to its PC release. Once again, however, Elden Ring: Nightreign is at the top.
The Switch 2 results are very good, but momentum must be maintained.
