PlayStation Plus Essential: A Promising Month After a Surprise Shake-Up?

Sony unexpectedly broke its usual announcement routine, and hopefully this isn’t just a one-off mistake but the start of a new chapter in PlayStation Plus Monthly Games.

Until now, PlayStation users were used to seeing the lineup for PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra, and Premium revealed on the Wednesday before the first Tuesday of each month at 8:30 a.m. Pacific Time. But things have changed—this article is being written on Wednesday morning, and Sony already dropped the list Tuesday afternoon. *Nice move, Sony…*

That also means no leaks occurred this time, so let’s take a look at the three titles hitting the Essential tier for the final month of summer 2025—hopefully not as blistering hot as last year. The headliner is *Lies of P* (PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4), but only the base game is included—*Lies of P: Overture* isn’t part of the deal. Second on the list is *DayZ* (PlayStation 4), a game that started its journey back in 2012, launched for PC in 2018, and then arrived on PS4 and Xbox One in 2019. Rounding out the trio is the niche pick of the month: *My Hero One’s Justice 2* (PlayStation 4), a brawler based on the popular anime series.

PlayStation Plus Turns 15

To celebrate the 15th anniversary, Sony is offering free avatars featuring characters and themes from *Cyberpunk 2077*, *Hogwarts Legacy*, *Diablo IV*, *God of War Ragnarök*, and *Twisted Metal*. July’s titles—*Diablo IV* (PS5, PS4), *The King of Fighters XV* (PS5, PS4), and *Jusant* (PS5)—will remain available until August 5.

*DayZ* remains the most baffling inclusion, as the PS4 version sits at a paltry 31 average on Metacritic, with a 4.5 user rating. After all these years, it’s hard to imagine many console players are still engaging with it…
